Easy Homemade Bagels – Chewy, Golden, and Perfect Every Time

Ingredients

  • 4 cups bread flour (or all-purpose if needed)

  • 1½ cups warm water (110°F)

  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast (1 packet)

  • 2 tbsp sugar (or honey)

  • 1½ tsp salt

For Boiling:

  • 2 tbsp baking soda

  • 1 tbsp honey (optional)

For Topping:

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

  • Everything seasoning, sesame, poppy seeds, or cinnamon sugar


Instructions

Step 1: Make the Dough

  • In a large bowl, whisk warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

  • Add flour and salt. Mix until a rough dough forms.

  • Knead by hand or mixer with dough hook for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 2: First Rise

  • Shape dough into a ball. Place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise 60–90 minutes until doubled in size.

Step 3: Divide & Shape

  • Punch down dough. Divide into 8 equal pieces.

  • Roll each into a ball, poke a hole in the center, and stretch into a bagel shape.

  • Place shaped bagels on parchment-lined tray, cover loosely, and rest 10–15 minutes.

Step 4: Preheat & Prep Water Bath

  • Preheat oven to 425°F.

  • Bring large pot of water to a gentle boil. Add baking soda and honey.

Step 5: Boil the Bagels

  • Gently lower bagels into water (2–3 at a time).

  • Boil 1 minute per side.

  • Use slotted spoon to remove and place on parchment.

Step 6: Add Toppings

  • Brush with egg wash.

  • Sprinkle desired toppings generously.

Step 7: Bake

  • Bake for 20–22 minutes or until golden brown.

  • Cool on wire rack before slicing.
